Have You Been Lei'd Today?

May 1st of each year is "May Day" in Hawaii. The first May day was held on May 01, 1928 to commemorate a celebration of the making and giving of the lei (flower necklace).

A piece of Hawaii Information and Hawaii History: A poet/writer Don Blanding wrote in a local paper of his suggestion to commemorate the celebration of making and giving lei's. He also is credited with throwing the lei overboard the ship....if it returned ...so would you. Fellow Writer Grace Tower Warren came up with the idea of a May first celebration for this very suggestion. She is also credited with coming up with the slogan "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii".

What a wonderful way to celebrate the Spirit of Aloha!

The following show I found on YouTube and I was so surprised to see a lei stand I know well! The two women shown stringing leis are mother and daughter and the stand is located on the corner of Maunakea and Pauahi Streets. Wonderful styles and prices!

Art of Lei. Tribute to Hawaiian Lei - Lei Day Honolulu

I couldn't find the song on video ...but here are the words to the song....

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii.

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
Garlands of flowers everywhere
All of the colors in the rainbow
Maidens with blossoms in their hair

Flowers that mean we should be happy
Throwing aside a load of care
Oh, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
May Day is happy days out there

Have you been lei'd today?

Happy May Day!

North Shore Hawaii Skydiving (Video)

On the same day of The Kite Surfers - Mokuleia Beach on the North Shore of Oahu we stopped by Dillingham Airfield on the North Shore of Oahu (Honolulu County) to see if there were any skydivers or sailplanes taking off or landing.

Dillingham Airfield was fully utilized during World War II. Over the years it was an Army Air Field and an Air Force Air Field and finally closed but used for civil use in the 1970's.

In a joint agreement with the military and the State of Hawaii it continued civil use and in the late 1990's until present there are the skydiving and sailplane rides. The gliders and many private aircraft are based here as well.

Well, here's a video I put together with skydivers we caught in action. What a treat!

What Kind of Legacy Will You Leave Behind?

What is your legacy? It's the footprints of our lives that we leave behind. No matter what profession, industry or company I am working for I want to leave behind a good impression; a great legacy. In my personal life with family and friends it is the same. I would love to leave a nice legacy behind so I am remembered in a good way. Gee, I wonder why it is not advisable to leave a "bad taste" in another's mouth and subsequently burn the bridges, so to speak. If it really has come to that point it has become a situation of moral failure.

When I die NO ONE is going to remember me for my computer skills in Photoshop and the way I can blur out the crows feet at the corner of my eyes by using the blur tool. NO ONE is going to remember me for how many transactions I have had in my life or how good a blog I had. They are going to remember me for the kind of person I was. The demeanor I carried. The soul I had.

The quality of my relationships with other people is what I will be remembered for and the most important part of MY LEGACY will be what my children will carry on from the qualities that came from me. The morals, values and the sense to be REAL. This is being honest with myself.

All the money, fame and fortune will not give me the reward I feel inside for the demons I have conquered in my life and the obstacles overcome; to become the person I am today.

So. Being honest with myself and with all of you. Why am I here posting my heart away on Active Rain? Hmmm....

  • Someone will use something from what I am writing about (whatever you can't use...just throw it away)
  • I will gain more insight from something I am reading (regardless what the subject is about, I am learning)
  • I achieved the knowing of what "MY VOICE" was and when it arrived was when I no longer wanted to "be like" the other bloggers. It happened when I realized that it had to come from me and writing from the inside to out.
  • Compassion to help others who are willing to ask for it.
  • To read even the negative things. WHY? Because it keeps me in check with me and the learning lesson from the negative stuff that gets thrown in front of me is what I DON'T want to be like.
  • Help a new member if they need it. (Need a little kick start, inspiration or just a friendly ear? I'm here)
  • And also for my business. Yes, all these posts go into the Google. (I am even found when looking for Hawaiian Superstitions.)
  • I want the public, members, consumers to know who I AM. (I work with client's who "click" with me. I can afford to have that choice....if not, I pass or share with another agent. I want members who "click" with me. Why would I want to associate with the neggies?)
  • I am here to SOCIALIZE too!  Why? This is the best thing since Real Estate Conventions! We mingle, we read, we talk and we find out what kinds of personalities are out there. (I love people. I love positive people. If I didn't love positive people I would be stuck in the past feeding off all the neggies of yesteryear. ....no wonder I was so messed up back then!
  • And most of all...for the friends I have made along the way.

I have learned more about myself and others from the interacting with others here on Active Rain. Do I boost the Network and glorify it? Of course! Some people fail to remember what was given to them for nothing. A chance to network and mingle with our peers. It's sad that some are ungrateful and utilize it to create havoc.

So, The Legacy that I will leave behind on Active Rain (and I'm saying this in case I live to 80 and still blogging on Active Rain) will be one of a positive nature. I am the woman who respected others and had good relationships with others here. Who gave hope to those who thought the little bit of negativity was not worth hanging around. Who just wants to be detached from the "MALCONTENTS". Who made REAL friends.

MY LEGACY IS ALL ABOUT THE QUALITY OF RELATIONSHIPS I HAVE WITH OTHERS (and that I have already passed to my children).

And.....   Without that quality, tell me.....what is a Professional worth?

HAWAIIAN LEGENDS: Kaena Point, Waimea Valley, and Two Heiau's

 www.localism.com featured post

By: Celeste "Sally" Cheeseman, Century 21 Liberty Homes, Mililani, HI  96789

There seems to be a story for every piece of land in Hawaii so let's start with Kaena Point (picture left taken from Sharks Cove) on the island of Oahu. Travel to Kaena Point from the North Shore and past Mokuleia; but alas! There is no thorough fare from this point to the other side except for a small pathway which can only be crossed by foot. (Unless you want to take a chance and fall of the cliff -this pathway is the only way around) The other side goes as far as (look at these pictures!) Yokohama Bay on the Waianae (north west side of Oahu). A huge boulder is nearby and is called the "Rock of Kauai" (Kauai is one of our other islands and also known as "The Garden Isle")

A baby boy born on Kauai on a stormy night and this boy was filled with strength as a rainbow appeared above the home where he was born. He was named Haupu and his home faced Oahu. One night while sleeping he woke in a daze with a dream filled mind of warriors paddling from Oahu  to wage war on  Kauai. Haupu ran to the side of a cliff, picked up a HUGE boulder and with his mighty strength heaved the boulder in the channel towards Oahu between the two islands.

Now, "Kaena" was an Oahu chief and on this very night he organized a fishing expedition. A very large crowd of men showed up with their best fishing nets and set them strategically in the center of certain spots so all they had to do was yell and the fish would swarm right into the nets. When they started yelling they never saw the boulder coming as it descended on the party. Canoes were smashed and Chief Kaena lost his life along with many of his men. The boulder hit with such force that when it hit it shoved a huge amount of sand towards the shore to create this point of land and the boulder so large that it stuck up above the water.

So the story goes that the Point of Kaena was named after their fallen Chief Kaena and the boulder named the Rock of Kauai. Me? I'll stick to the roads. I have been to the end of both sides but I think I'll just stick to what's safe.

Waimea Valley, Kupopolo and Puu o Mahuka Heiau's

Waimea "The Valley of the Priests" is appropriately named and gained it's title around the year 1090 when Kamapuaa (Ruler of Oahu and raised to Demigod status  as the pig deity) awarded the land to high priest Lono a wohi. From that time until Western contact and the overturn of the Hawaiian religion the land belonged to the high priests of the Paao line.

The high priest erected in and around the valley two large heiau's (pronounced: hay ee ow's...or in English: Temples)

Heiau Kupopolo was built during the reign of Kahahana and in one legend he asks his priest (Kaopulupulu) to ask the gods if they approve of him and whether the island of Kauai would surrender if he invaded their shores. It was built on the beach of Waimea Bay but when High Priest Kaopulupulu used it he received no answer from Kauai. (they believed that thoughts are little gods and travel in space and fly freely as soaring birds)

Kahahana then had Puu O Mahuka Heiau built high in the mountains overlooking Waimea Bay (famous legendary big wave surfing spot on the North Shore) all the way to Kaeana Point on the North Shore.  This is the largest heiau on my island of Oahu covering over 5 acres of land.

It is said that this was a powerful place for the Kahuna (priest, expert, teacher, and/or adviser) and one of the two places the wives of the ancient chiefs gave birth. It is also said that it was a place for human sacrifice and the heiau shows great workmanship especially around all the paths. Puu O Mahuka Heiau is a national landmark and a registered state historical site.

When Priest Kaopulupulu sent out thought waves to the Chief Kekaulike of Kaui the answer returned quickly. Kauai wanted peace.

Just so you can kind of get a view of Oahu's North Shore.....
